It could be, who knows? The present is a fact, the future is a guess. Actually the economy was in fairly goodc shape in 1987 if my memory is correct. The market was killed by high P/E ratios and high interest rates. We only have one of those now, and at the rate we are going P/E ratios will be "normal" very soon. At the close of 877 in the SP500, the P/e on 1998 estimated earnings is 18, a not unreasonable figure considering interest rates. There is now almost no chance the FEd will raise interest rates, a real plus for the market long term.
