Actually, this is not a surprising statistic when you consider that drug use and prostitution are endemic to the region and that anal sex is practiced as a form of birth control among hetero couples on that continent. The main identified vectors for the transmission of AIDS are, intravenous drug use, unprotected sex with infected partners and contaminated blood transfusions.
