I had three cousins involved in D day. One was in the 1st Infantry Division and wounded on the second day of the invasion, the other two (brothers) were in the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne and came out clean. To this day, they don't talk about it. Their third brother, in the 3rd Marines, was in Guadalcanal followed by Iwo Jima were he got shot up badly. He was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart clustered.

I was just a very young kid observing the strain on their parents (my aunts and uncles).

The draft was getting very deep at that time. My dad was only classified 4F because he had the tips of three fingers missing from his left hand.

Fortunately, our extended family never had to hang a gold star flag in their window.
