Obama would have preferred not to attach himself too closely to the details of the healthcare bill, I think. That way he could have floated above the fray on his personal popularity, his preferred mode of being. But it was looking likely to bog down, Nancy Pelosi not being what you could call a smart or competent Speaker. So now he has to take action.

Good. The more he attaches himself to healthcare policy, the more points of attack there are. Obama is far more popular than his policies. This will bring the numbers closer together.
