Seattle preparing for electric vehicles

SEATTLE - By the time Nissan Corporation launches its new all electric vehicle in 2010, Seattle will already have a system in place to help owners charge up.

Nissan Director of Product Planning Mark Perry is in Seattle to hear more about the City's plan to power up a network of electric vehicle recharging stations.

Perry said Nissan selected Seattle to be one of its launch sites for the new vehicles because residents here support energy efficient eco-friendly products.

He says the new Nissan will be powerful enough for freeway travel and will get 100 miles on a single charge. But he says it takes a city like Seattle to get things going.

"The vehicle doesn't work without a supporting charging infrastructure," explained Perry.

The Mayor's office is promising to get that infrastructure in place.

Representatives say they are considering a blend of public-private recharging sites spread throughout the City.

The city is also applying for federal stimulus money to pay for the project which would place Seattle in a firm position as a national leader in alternative energy vehicles.
