OK, lets take an objective look at the numbers for this quarter...no hype.
Here are the major contracts announced by IDX for 1Q98:
- California..........................28 TP600's..........$1.6 mil
- INS..................................43 TP600's..........$2.5 mil
- NJ.....................................8 TP600's............$450,000
- Conavi..............................100 Touchlocks....$300,000
- ANADAC DC Contract.......Service Contract....$2 mil over 12 months (announced 9/3/97)
So, considering only the above contracts, this adds up to $4.85 mil in product revenues and maybe $200,000 in service revenues.
Now with a 50% margin on product revenues and a 20% margin on service revenues, this would yield a total pre-tax profit of $2,465,000 for the quarter. Figuring 35% for Uncle Sam still gives us a profit of $1,600,000. Divided by 25 mil shares comes to ......drum roll please......6.4 cents per share.
No hype...only real numbers, Doc

While your effort to generate 6.4 cnets in earnings on about $5mil of known sales is commendable it is not realistic......
the ratios for profitabilty will only hold so long as fixed costs such as salaries and R&D and other SG&A type stuff are covered by normal amounts of revenue......
First off if the revenue is $5million the stock is worth about a dollar to me and I would sell immediately Second they have no chance of generating 6 cents in earnings without at least $15 million in revenue (probably closer to $20million)
Once again I am focused on the revenue numbers...... It is clear that the operational margins are quite healthy and are not a concern so it is the product revenue that really holds the key.
I expect service revenue to be in the range of $7-9million but would not get too excited with a surprise of $10 or a dissappointment of $6million as the impact of service revenues on long term potential is insignificant.
My feeling from what information I have seen regarding the products likely to impact the books this quarter is that product revenuw will fall between $8million and $15 million. A wide range for sure but I would add some refinement by saying the most likely range is $9million to $11 million.
If we see $8million in service revenue and $10million in product revenue (the midpoint of my expectations) I would expect about 6 cents a share. I would really like to see overall revenue about $20million as this would force significant adjustments in overall revenue expectations. How could this company generate $20mil in the first quarter and possibly generate less than $90million ( more likely to generate $100+ million) for the fiscal year.
What a blessing to get these shares below $10........... I hope they stay at this price a little longer so I can increase my position

Identix had revenues of 16.5 Mil for Q4 and earned ~1 Mil net or .04cents/share OR they delivered 6 percent of Revenues to the bottom line. This is the important figure to watch tomorrow as well as overall revenue growth. What percentage of revenue can be delivered to the bottom line?? This figure must grow or we own an unprofitable business.

Monday October 27 2:15 PM EST Company Press Release
Finger/Matrix Employees Refuse to Go Home Despite Company's Lack of Funds
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 27, 1997--Despite the announcement Oct. 8 by Finger/Matrix Inc. (NASDAQ:EBB - news) that it was suspending operations temporarily pending receipt of additional funding, the bulk of its staff has refused the layoff and continues to come to work as usual, without any guarantee of compensation.
''They are confident we will secure additional capital soon and they don't want their projects to be interrupted,'' Thomas T. Harding, president, reported.
The electronic fingerprinting pioneer has three new completely re-engineered systems ready for market, including an advanced 10-printer recently certified by the FBI for use in the law enforcement field both here and abroad, but it has exhausted its operating funds.
Harding said serious discussions are under way with several prospective investors, both corporate and financial.
''If the funds become available from one of these sources our loyal employees will be paid for their voluntary services,'' he added.

As John implied, Club Doc's calculations are faulty in that you are taking the gross margin and assuming that it is also the operating margin. That means you are not taking into account any cost for salaries, wages, pens, computers, phone bills, costs of the annual report, etc. Those are all operating expenses which must be deducted from gross profit to get operating profit, which is then added to interest income and taxed, leading to net income or EPS.
Yes, on top of the fact that the company will have a hell of a lot more than $5 million in revenue.

I wouldn't call this report positive. At this point a buyout might be the best option for this company.

As usual, IDX misses the mark. Legal expenses are legal expenses - period! We should not have to be paying them in the first place. I bet that Mr. Fowler will have some tough questions to answer at the annual meeting. Let's see the hypsters paint a rosey picture out of this mess.

R&D was up 93% over 1Q97 and up 54% over 4Q97. Wonder what's going on there...hmmm...maybe the palm scanner development?
Increase in revenues looks good...even up 14% over the quarter ending June 30 and up 56% over the year ago period. It was R&D and litigation that ate up the profits. Two cents is disappointing, but the company seems to be growing rapidly...judging by the revenue increases.
In regards to the litigation expenses - are these expenses normally considered to be XORD and therefore excluded from the EPS? I wonder how much of the "Litigation Expenses and Reserves" are actually reserves? Seems like an awful lot of money there when we really didn't have any major lawsuits.
Thanks to the thread for the education on operating margins vs. gross margins...now I'm even more dangerous!

What's the deal with 423K in litigation expenses when last quarter was only 29K.

Another question is when is all this litigation and associated expenses going to stop? It's been ongoing since I've owned the stock(about 2 years) and probably will continue after looking at the track record. Are there lawsuits pending or are unknown to the general public?I would have been pleased with the 4 cents without the "ongoing" litigation charges. Fowler and co better be forthcoming in the CC.These guys are making a mistake by not giving shareholders concerns any merit. Stock down today mostly because of earnings and not the market in general IMO.
