Iranian women deserve more freedom: Mousavi’s wife
By Iran Quest on May 21, 2009

Presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi’s wife, who has been campaigning along his side, calls for a greater social freedom for Iranian women.

“When participating in social activities, our women must feel both secure and liberated. In other words, they must be allowed to freely choose their career, work environment, and clothing [in compliance with Islamic dress code],” Zahra Rahnavard told a gathering of young women who support Mousavi Wednesday.

“The democracy we seek is a religious democracy, which would allow young women of our time to thrive and flourish by providing them with security, freedom, and employment,” added the former chancellor of Tehran’s Al-Zahra University.

Rahnavard, an Arts professor at the University of Tehran, also said that with the adoption of the correct policies, discrimination could end.

Her comments followed Tuesday remarks by Mousavi which included a promise to try to broaden women’s rights by seeking changes in legislation.

The former prime minister is expected to be President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s main rival in the June 12 vote, which would be the country’s tenth.

He is also the first candidate in Iranian politics to introduce a potential first lady figure into the presidential race by incorporating his wife in an active role in the campaign. Such a trend had never been practiced in the Islamic Republic before.
