IPO Enthusiasm Helps REITs Buck the Market

On a down day, the REIT sector has showed strength.

Real estate investment trusts are up today as the rest of the market gives back some more of the week's gains. Recent IPOs in the sector are attracting attention, and today there is news of an another new REIT in the works. Today the stocks are showing modest gains across the board.

The Office REITs Index is flat today. It currently lags the S&P 500 by -7.7% over the last month.

A new office REIT recently became the first IPO of the month. Government Properties Income Trust (NYSE: GOV - News) debuted on the public exchanges June 2, and has since fallen from its $20 offering price to around $18.60. The stock is off by -1% today.

SL Green Realty (NYSE: SLG - News) and Liberty Property Trust (NYSE: LRY - News) are leading the office REIT index with gains of over 2%. Parkway Properties (NYSE: PKY - News) is falling by -6% after being downgraded to Underperform by William Blair.

In another IPO in the REIT space, Cypress Sharpridge Investments (NYSE: CYS - News) raised approximately $100.1 million in an initial public offering on Friday.

The Residential REITs Index residential sector is also getting attention from news surrounding Two Harbors Investment merging with Capitol Acquisition (AMEX: CLA - News) to form an REIT. The new REIT will be headed by mortgage veterans from Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.

Currently the Residential REIT Index is up by 0.7%. BRE Properties (NYSE: BRE - News) and Equity Residential (NYSE: EQR - News) are leading the way with gains of around 1%.

The Industrial REITs Index is up by 0.9% today. It now trails the S&P 500 by just -0.2% over the last month.

Today the Index is being helped by ProLogis (NYSE: PLD - News), which is up by 3%. It is followed by EastGroup Properties (NYSE: EGP - News) and DCT Industrial Trust (NYSE: DCT - News). Both stocks are up by more than 1%.

First Industrial Realty Trust (NYSE: FR - News) is one of the Index's two losers today, trading lower fractionally.
