My southern ancestors were in South Carolina. I found a graveyard at the Dothan Methodist Church where a bunch of them are buried, including the first one to have my given name. The headstone inscriptions are on-line.

One of my branches with a different surname is big on genealogy and has its own website where I found a lot of information on when King George granted huge land grants to English John.
