But something different is at stake: which elements of which party are inflaming the kooks right now. It's very clear, in both instances, that it's folk of the further right, not the further left.

I couldn't agree more. I give much of this credit to Obama. He obviously has tried very hard to tamp out and silence those from the extreme left. What I don't get is why republicans are not learning from this and doing the same for their party. They instead seem to encourage it and by doing so just cause more people to no longer identify with the party. .....So as the moderate republicans become disgusted and walk, the hard liners get stronger, albeit smaller in numbers.
