>>We were once the finest country in the world, no doubt...<<

Sorry, but we have been brutal most of our history. One didn't have to look far if one was open to the question. But for the True Believers, to point out any of our past flaws is tantamount to treason. I for one don't think we can move on until we recognize our past errors and move on from there. We have to learn what our own dark nature looks like and address that before we can have any "street cred" for pointing out the flaws in others.

Our Civil War aka War Between the States is considered by many students of war to be the first modern war with machine guns, aerial attacks, hand grenades and bullets that were designed to cripple and maim. It is well known that it takes 10 times as many people to deal with wounded as it does to deal with dead. So, we maimed. We maimed a lot.

Our finest moments have always had a tarnished side to them occurring at nearly the same moment. While we enacted the Marshall Plan, we were sicking dogs on blacks in Alabama and Georgia and building world-ending super bombs. While we enacted the Pure Food and Drugs act, we were colonizing and shooting Filipinos freedom fighters with our newly invented Colt .45 M1911 automatic pistols. We eventually got a 40 hour work week but not before Pinkertons had been hired to bash in the heads of our grandparents with government complicity. I think one of the requirements of the radical right orthodoxy is that we first have to blame others for what logically progresses from one misstep to another, even when we have made identical missteps ourselves as a nation.
