Could be. My personal bias is that oil - or at least some of it - did not come from old forests and dinosaur kaka, but was generated by bacteria. It is known that bacteria produce natural gas. Scientists were able to change the genetics of an E. coli in such a way that the bug can secrete a substance indistinguishable from oil. If guys can do this in the lab, it also may have happened in nature.
