I think that the efficient market theory is getting thoroughly discredited. This is just one aspect of it. There is clearly a herd mentality when it comes to investing. You get decision making by committee and group think happens. You get a bunch of CEOs together on the gold course4, and they all decide to buy option ARM originators at the top of the market (goodbye Wachovia and half of HSBC).

I have a sharp buddy who deliberately doesn't do his own investing. Doesn't want to be emotionally involved. That makes sense. He places his wealth in a small local firm whose philosophy he likes.

One has to wonder what is better: shopping it out to a small committee or dealing with the beast and your emotions by yourself in isolation. I obviously prefer the latter.
