And my wino-guro (when he is coherent) says that 2007 is showing a lot of promise for California wines.

I was having a conversation with someone the other day who suggested that the whole strong focus on vintages was really far more appropriate to France than it was in California. In France, the weather is not kind and it is only once in a while that it does the right things to give one ripe, well developed grapes. In California, we get ripe, well-developed grapes every year. Yeah, sometimes there is a frost during bud break and we lose a lot of production from some vineyards. And, once in a while there is rain around harvest that makes the harvest date decision difficult. But, overall these variations are minor compared to the differences between winemakers. In fact, as time goes on this is increasingly true even in France since there are more tricks and techniques to compensate when nature is being less friendly.

Even 1998, which had a terrible reputation because of the harvest rains was only a problem for some people. Those who panicked and harvested early because of the threat of rain made rather green, thin wines that certainly weren't up to the usual caliber, but all of the winemakers that I buy from regularly toughed it out and waited to harvest when they thought the grapes were ready and they made great wine ... some of it the best stuff in my cellar.
