I can't believe these "conservatives" criticize the DMV. I've been to DMV's in Texas, CA and Utah. They've all been almost carbon copies of each other, and to me, they all seemed MODELS of efficiency. Licencing EVERY vehicle and driver in the state.

First off, I only had to go to the DMV at all because I'd moved to a new state or bought a used vehicle. Otherwise, my interaction has always been mail-based.

Once there though, I've always been impressed how they deal with the totally unpredictable size of crowd they have to handle. You don't have to line up, you just take a number and sit. There's no chance that someone who came in later than you will be served before you, so there are no disputes over that.

It wasn't meant to be pleasant, only efficient, but I think they do a great job.
