I've been to Ireland several times. The last time was almost two years ago.

The number of Eastern Europeans is astounding, even in the West. Many are in the construction trades and these days that's not where you want to be.

Tension could flare up over job losses, not to mention the age-old friction there has been between the Irish and the "tinkers" going back forever as far as I know. Gypsies / Tinkers are generally of Romanian descent in Ireland.

Tinkers in Dublin aren't trusted, as they are often a bit on the shady side. See the movie "Snatch" and the character Brad Pitt plays for an example. I imagine in England they are called "pikers", or at least that's the name in the movie.

Belfast has always been somewhat of a rough neighborhood. Given the above conditions and history it appears to be a continuation of many years of friction between the two groups. Perhaps in better economic times more tolerance exists.
