General DataComm Announces Multimillion Dollar Agreement with Lucent Technologies

MIDDLEBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1997-- General DataComm, Inc. (NYSE:GDC), the global leader in providing real business solutions based on ATM
products and services, has signed a multi-year agreement, worth up to $90 million, with Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) to provide GDC APEX(R) ATM edge switches
for various customer projects.

''Today's announcement is another example of ways Lucent and GDC are working together to provide a broad range of data products to a wide variety of customers,''
said Harry Bosco, Lucent Technologies Broadband Networking Unit president. ''We have found, and our customers have confirmed, that the integration of GDC's
products to our product portfolio is a winning combination.''

The GDC/Lucent relationship, which began in September 1995, integrates the GDC APEX family of ATM systems with Lucent's GlobeView(R)-2000 Broadband System
to serve customers. Other recent announcements between the two companies include a multimillion dollar contract to expand the use of ATM technology for the
Netherlands' PTT Telecom national broadband services network, and a new integrated network management capability between the two companies' ATM products,
enabled by ATM software, for efficient, manageable voice, video and data networking.
