Palin needs to apologize for her distasteful lies

In her Tuesday column, Kathleen Parker criticized David Letterman for his recent distasteful joke, made at the expense of Sarah Palin's daughters — and rightfully so. Sometimes comedians go too far, and have to suffer the consequences. Letterman apologized once the issue hit the media, and again on Monday night, and Palin released a statement accepting the apology.
But the whole episode made me think about some things Palin said during the Presidential campaign. The Obamas have two young daughters who are at that age where they are still children, but old enough to at least partially comprehend what goes on around them. One has to wonder what their reaction was to Palin's oft-repeated statement that their father had "palled around with terrorists" — an accusation that has pretty heavy meaning in these post-911 days. I don't remember Palin apologizing to anyone.
Granted, the two issues aren't the same. Letterman, while performing as a comedic figure, told a terrible joke, one time, to his regular audience. Palin, on the other hand, while asking the country to see her as a moral leader, told a bald-faced lie, over and over again, to the whole country. To me, that's just as disgusting, if not more so.
