Since you seem to think you have backed me into a corner...

Well, we are making progress. It wouldn't be all they do, but once done they publish. Which is the point of most research. Even if the research is done for a corporation which might want proprietary information, there is still a lot of it which winds up being submitted for publication. Just look at the conferences for those working in semiconductors and the number of papers which are presented on various aspects of semiconductor fabrication, which is something that the companies are extremely concerned about keeping proprietary details.
