The better question is why only Americans should be subsidizing the profits and the R&D budgets of Big Pharma. Shouldn't the Canucks have to do the same?

Why stop there?

Why not make sure that Hyundais and Kias cost the same as Hondas and Chevys?

The fact is that markets are different in each country because of various regulatory structures, taxation, legislative processes and at least a thousand other variables. You can't make them all the be the same.

If you were to cut off sales of American drugs in Canada tomorrow what would happen to American drug prices? Answer? They'd go up. Overnight. Because Canadian sales generate contribution margin.

Suppose the government took over paying for (and negotiating for) all drugs used in the US next week? What happens? Do prices go up in Canada? Hell, no. Because the Canadian market won't bear it. The end result is a reduction in R&D, and the impact is on the American health care market. The others are mere followers.
