It is "one" example that we have dealt with on a frequent basis over the last couple of years.

But I could give you a hundred examples of inefficiencies at Medicare and Medicaid.

The most blatant was last year's adoption of the National Provider ID (NPI). This was to be a single identifying number used by all providers, to eliminate the problem of each insurance plan assigning its own provider ID to every provider (thus, creating thousands of different IDs to track per provider). Sounds like a good idea, right?

No problem. Every commercial insurance company has made the transition.

What about Medicare? Nope. You still have to have a "legacy" provider ID because their archaic system uses a mapping from the new NPI to the legacy number. End result: A more complicated process for just about everything. The only thing is, if that "legacy" number appears anywhere on the claim, the claim will be denied. Yet, if you need to call them to discuss a claim, you have to use the legacy #.

Medicaid is worse. In addition to the NPI they require a legacy #, but now also require a Taxonomy Code (a code from a 120-page list) to identify the specialty of the physician.

It is sheer incompetence. While every private insurer was able to adapt, NO government insurer could.

Why do you think that is?
