I would think that the number of $ that goes into shorts and puts is small compared to total $ that go into the markets. Many institions and most mutual funds are very limited in their use of these instruments. Spike bottoms without a retest are more common in non -equity markets than they are in equity markets, but anything can happen. A more likely scenario is a fall past recent lows , enough to shake the rest of the complacency out of the market. Your guess is as good as mine. Personally, I am using weakness to add to positions on a limited basis. INTC at 70 with estimated 1998 earnings of $4.85 is a P/E of only 14.43 so those who could get a broker got a long term bargain. I paid more but still got some at a 16 P/E and a 23% discount to it's high. The fall from 102 to 70 is a real correction by anybody's standards.
I've learned my lesson... I'm going to put some of my funds with a full service broker and try to negotiate commissions.
