Costs skyrocket due to inelastic demand. That's always been a fundamental paradox of health care.

There's going to be some form of rationing when the state takes over health care, and it's not going to be pretty. People who are used to their brand name prescription meds paid for by insurance are going to be outraged once they're forced onto generics made in India that only get cursory FDA regulation. And that's just one example.
