FROSTBURG, Md.
The Allegany County Chamber of Commerce is questioning the environmental ramifications of natural gas production in western Maryland.

The business group has invited industry representatives and state environmental regulators to a meeting Tuesday in Frostburg to discuss the potential harvesting of gas from a vast geological structure called the Marcellus Shale.

Chamber President Kolin Jan (koh'-lin jan) cites a government report that millions of gallons of water must be used to cut the shale and release the gas.

Jan told the Cumberland Times-News that county and state governments must ensure an adequate supply of clean water for area residents.
