When I was stationed at NAS Brunswick I was living in a cabin out on one of the peninsulas with little to entertain myself with.... A neighbors cat had a litter several weeks before and she asked if I wanted any. I asked her if they were weaned, generally speaking that takes about 12-14 weeks, and she said they were so I picked out a male and female.... and dubbed them Leon and Mawer respectively. I've always heard that cats were more or less untrainable.... but I needed some way to control them without having to get up every 5 minutes to discipline them..... I found the perfect tool that was actually fun to use, a spritzer bottle. The stream it shot was strong enough to reach into both the kitchen and bedroom if I was sitting in the living room (this was a small cabin)and they never associated me with getting wet. So, when they did something displeasing to me, like clawing furniture I'd call their name and say NO and immediately give them a squirt. After a couple weeks of that I found that they had learned their names (a huge accomplishment) and understood the word NO..... After a few months they acted like dogs more than cats.

My cabin had a dirt U for a driveway. I'd pull into the U and they'd be nowhere to be found..... Until I turned off my car, opened the door and they'd both be sitting there like they were waiting all day.

There was just one problem. They'd wait until I went to sleep then the male would wrap himself around my head and the female would nuzzle up to my chest and start suckling. I'd wakeup in the morning with this big wet spot on my tee shirt.... That's when I learned another lesson, females take longer to wean than males....<g>
