how did the 'Republic' survive with top tax rates in the 70%-90% range for decades?

I didn't say the republic wouldn't survive, I said higher tax rates are harmful. So are car crashes, but they happen every day and the republic manages to survive.

And what does any of this have to do with your assertion of "Sure it does." in response to

"It doesn't work that way.

The recipients and beneficiaries of a new government program can clearly see the direct benefits. They and others can't as clearly see the indirect harm. "Free" or even heavily subsidized health care programs given out to a significant portion of the population become very difficult to reverse or clean up, no matter how much doing so might be a good idea."
