One of my friends, age 39, moved from Los Angeles to Argentina five years ago. He's a Porteño now. Speaks Spanish better than I do, and I've had years of practice.

He bought a condo in Palermo, the happening part of Buenos Aires, for $70k. It costs more now. In a city that in many ways is comparable to Los Angeles (it's nothing like Mexico) he was able to live very well on the interest from his savings - a lifestyle which would require holding a job if he still lived in Los Angeles, or most 34 year olds for that matter.

He visits occasionally but only sees his family from Louisiana once a year when they go to Cancun for vacation. No sense making a special trip back to see the bayou.
