You are so blind. 80% of the basic research that has led to almost all of our pharmaceutical advances have been funded through government through NIH and other government
based funding mechanisms. The private sector is great at adding little chemical moieties to already effective compounds so they can patent them and profit but not good for much else. The biotech startups are usually the result of university based government funded research.
