America pioneered cell phone technology. It's only natural for Americans to keep the holdover phrase "cell phone."


Okay. Hugh made a good point that the original cell phones were not very mobile........hence the difference in terms with what the Brits and others call mobiles. But then I saw his answer to your lastest post where he's saying that mobiles were invented before cells. So now I am confused.

And you're saying that we pioneered the tech. but Nokia and Ericsson, Finnish and Swedish firms, are some of the biggest producers of cell phones. Were they not involved in the pioneering as well?
