And you're saying that we pioneered the tech. but Nokia and Ericsson, Finnish and Swedish firms, are some of the biggest producers of cell phones.

At the time, we were dealing only with Motorola. The small firm I worked for and was a shareholder in during the late 70s, with about 80 employees total, had the contract for originally mapping the "cells" and other services in the US. It was by far the biggest contract we had ever had.

This was a long time before the first "cell phone" made it to the market. My recollection is that there were to be two (and only two) carriers in each coverage area to promote competition. There was a system in the Nordic countries that went live before the one in the US which may account for some of those manufacturers there.

Prior to that, there were a very few "mobile phones" which did not use cellular technology at all and were very expensive and hard to get.

I don't think anyone who worked on that project envisioned it becoming what it has today. I remember there was a great deal of excitement about it, but more because we needed the money than because of what it might become.
