I am intrigued by your interest in the subject...perhaps California taxation has been a life-long interest; or, perhaps, sadly, you are a laid-off California employee. In any case, I have unearthed this magnificent piece on the history of California taxation from Mike Mishedlo via these very SI threads. Message 25704795 I certainly hope you have the time and talent to read, understand and absorb this very enlightening treatise by Doug Thornburn.

Sorry, I had first hand experience of what Prop 13 has done to CA. I lived in the state for 11 years. In fact, Prop 13 was one of the reasons I left the state. Prop 13 was created by wingers to cut down on their taxes because they believe gov't is a waste of time. They tried the same trick in OR and in WA state with much less success.....fortunately.
