Today is probably the saddest day I've ever witnessed.

My dad made sure that whenever a there was a notable news day, we would remember it. Some of those that I remember:

He woke us up at midnight in 1949 so we could watch it snow in L.A. I remember him telling me it would probably never happen again - he's been right - so far.

He made arrangements for some of my friends and me to attend the Democratic Convention at the Sports Arena in L.A. when JFK was nominated and kept telling me to pay attention. (I was a teenager.)

He called me from the airport on his way to Dallas the day JFK was assassinated. Watch the TV he told me.

He called in 1965 when a motor cop tried to arrest a drunk driver in Watts and his family interfered. He told me to go to the grocery store and stock up. Six days of rioting ensued.

He called one day in 1968 to tell me to make sure to read the paper because MLK had been assassinated and it was going to change the nation.

He called in June, 1968 to tell me to turn on the TV and then rushed to the Ambassador Hotel.

He called in August 1968 from Chicago while he was covering the Democratic Convention to tell me about the Chicago police beating and arresting protesters. He was outraged and mad that newspaper people were being beaten too.

He called when the Embassy was overtaken in Iran in 1979 and said it was going to change the world, that Carter was toast.

He called me while I was at work one day and told me to leave and get home as soon as possible because the jury had just found the 4 cops innocent in the Rodney King case. He knew there was going to be another riot.

There were several other occasions but those were some that stood out.

We talked non-stop about the assassinations because he covered them all. He had endless behind-the-scenes stories about all the conventions and Olympics he covered. We read all the stories about Watergate and discussed it endlessly. He always believe Woodward and Bernstein were being used by a disgruntled FBI employee. Turns out he was right, but he didn't live long enough to find that out.

He was a stickler for reporting the news as it was - DON'T slant it - tell it like it is. I should mention he was a Democrat - before they were called liberal.

I can hear him now. He would be shouting in outrage at what ABC did tonight. He would be warning me again. The nation is changing again. Watch out. This is unprecedented. This never happened before.

His harshest words would be directed at that schmuck Charlie Gibson for allowing what used to be an honorable profession to be co-opted and bastardized.

A very sad day.

Oh - nice grub.
