Cellular damage caused by inflammation can cause some cancers. One example is stomach acid reflux causing esophageal cancer, another is lung cancer being caused by cigarette smoke or asbestos.

A healthy immune system will attempt to destroy these damaged cells if they do not repair themselves. Blood tests which measure generalized measures of inflammation, such as the C-Reactive Protein test, often rise when the immune system is fighting cancer. But this non-specific test could also indicate an auto-immune diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, or active heart disease.

The immune response which attempts to destroy some types of cancers also typically cause characteristic autoimmune diseases. The symptoms caused by these "Paraneoplastic Autoimmune Syndromes" are the most common way these associated cancers are diagnosed.

But chronic immune activation also makes the immune system less accurate and less responsive to specific threats. So in this way there is also a connection between reduced chronic inflammation and lower rates of cancer.
