The category is something like "a living member of a sentient species".

That's an oversimplification, for example a member with no sentience, and no potential for even minimal sentience, would at least be a major distinction within the category, and perhaps a different category perhaps the category could be expressed as "living organisms with sentience or potential for sentience". Also aggressively acting evil people, while in the same category, would not be treated the same.
