Rather than invade Iraq, in response to the payments to the families of suicide bombers, it would have made more sense to announce that for each payment there would be a hole made in a Presidential Palace. After a dozen or so holes, I guess Saddam might have put a stop to paying suicide bombers. The size of the hole could be proportionate to the number of people killed by the suicide bombers.

The main reason given for the invasion was the presence of weapons of mass destruction, ready to launch in 45 minutes [according to Tony Blair], and Condoleezza was worried about mushroom clouds over Manhattan. Both were obviously false worries [and it was obvious BEFORE the invasion].

A more realistic WMD worry was the Islamic Jihad atomic bombs in Pakistan but those WMDs were apparently not a concern, though Khan was selling the ways and means and maybe even the finished products.

Part of the reason for conquering Iraq was oil, with the idea that the invasion would pay for itself in oil. That turns out to have been a wild goose chase. The oil exports are certainly not paying for the invasion and occupation.
