Iran is so confusing, because it really does have institutions, unlike the Arab regimes, which seem to have only the apparatus of the tribe and the police state. If these institutions split, particularly the clergy which does have authority that the state can't simply overrule, it's a very iffy situation for all concerned. As the Horovitz piece I posted yesterday point out, popular support for this regime has now evaporated even among conservative Muslims. The urban middle classes have been gone for some time. So who does that leave? Village peasants? We have seen that they are importing Arabs do to their dirty work, and now we hear of disaffection even within the Revolutionary Guard.
