I'd say if Americans were forced to rank their priorities, they'd be more concerned about our oil dependence than they are concerned for the climate. That's because oil dependence is causing problems today, whereas the climate will cause problems in the future. It's a symptom of our inability to plan for the long term in this country.

That's why I've always been an advocate of arguing the case for oil independence to get everyone on board. Their are overlaps to solutions for our oil dependency and climate change. So if you focus on the former, you make great progress on the latter. But it's easier to sell the former.
