China, more than any other country I can think of, values stability. They can see, as anybody in their position would, that the future of the dollar is grim. It should come as no surprise if you know anything about China that they will take steps to shield themselves from the demise of the dollar. It should also come as no surprise that they will draw as little attention to the problem as possible -- that is their way.

The dollar is like a burning building -- if you yell 'fire' you will cause a stampede and that can be fatal to you as you try to leave the building. But the burning of the building is never in doubt. The issue is how to leave the burning building in an orderly manner. That is the Chinese view and it is sensible and practical.
