"In an interview, Mr. Hemelt said Matrixx’s subpoena was not intended to silence Mr. Mulligan. Rather, Mr. Hemelt said, the company was hoping to “find out how he fit into this pattern” of what Mr. Hemelt called aggressive short-selling of Matrixx shares."

A sure sign of a stock promoter. Stock promoters blame share price drops on shorts as well as other diversionary excuses.
The reality is that share prices drop because companies fail to deliver on the promises and expectations that exist. In the cases of companies whose share price has been inflated by stock promotion the stock promoter attempts to blame the decline on the shorter or the messenger when in reality the decline is a result of the share price inflation created and or facilitated by the promoter in the first place.
One should avoid buying shares in companies whenever management actively participates in promotion of the firms stock.
Managments job is to advance the value of the firm by improving operations, market share, value proposition and increasing earnings.
