I'm not sure there is much controversy (other than perhaps with Solon) about when you have a life (living organism), that is human (homo-sapiens).

I think that pro-choice people (or at least those that look in to and/or debate this point) would say the issue is when you have "a person", and they would define "a person" as requiring sentience, a certain level of intelligence, and perhaps physical separateness (birth, or c-section), or at least the ability to survive such separateness (viability).
