>>Palin will be a Senator.<<

Maybe, maybe not. She risked her future chances for US Senate (or House) by opposing part of Alaska's federal stimulus funding. Alaskans expect their delegation in DC to bring home the bacon.

The presidential campaign has kind of messed up her Alaskan political career. People think she's focused on her national aspirations at the expense of state needs. The damage isn't fatal, but her popularity is down from 90% to 55% or so. If she makes progress on the gasline, she should be able to win reelection as Governor in 2010. Then she could evaluate future prospects after she completes her second term as governor in 2014.

Her best shot at the Senate is 2014, when first-termer Mark Begich (D) comes up for reelection. But Begich is a blue dog Democrat who will have a serious advantage as incumbent. His campaign ads would pound her for refusing part of the stimulus.

She could also run for US House if Don Young (R) retires. Don is 76 now, so by 2014 he might be ready to go. The Democrats would have real trouble finding a candidate with enough name recognition to compete against her.
