I do recall some talk about "the coming ice age," but don't recall at all a movie that was "forced viewing" in schools or letters from "prominent scientists to government." And there certainly wasn't anything like the IPCC, which reviewed all of the research on the topic. It isn't that the findings weren't taken seriously; they were. More money went into climate research, which resulted in people learning more about the factors that determine climate, and that resulted in the IPCC and where we are now. Climate scientists haven't come to their climate change theories without a great deal of research, debate and thought.
