Two things.

1) I think there are all sorts of possibilities that get us closer to a full 360 degree energy production and use cycle. For example, what if they perfect that technology to create fuel out of CO2 at room temperature? That could be a great solution.

2) We can certainly wait for fossil fuels to run out and become more costly. However, that will result in a very painful economic transition versus if we planned for it, we'd have the technologies read to substitute with little economic pain. It's really about when we want to make the investments. Do we do it when our back is against the wall or do we do it now when we have some time? I'm a proactive person, and therefore, I like to plan and act ahead of the firedrill. However, I do understand that the typical American would prefer the extended pain of the firedrill. So more than likely that is what we're going to get.
