Technically, you've got me on Eisenhower/Vietnam. However, we all know he did jack squat in Vietnam compared to Kennedy and particularly Johnson.

Re: "many a southern politician began as a democrat. why did they switch parties? uhm... oh, that lil ol civil rights act thing."

You seem to be implying that Republicans are/were anti civil rights in general, and that southern democrats became republicans over the issue. Hey, a grain of truth in everything, I suppose. But that has nothing to do with my thoughts on McCarthy. It's completely off point. I guess you have nothing to say about that, actually. So I still feel McCarthy's ways were those of a Democrat. He was from Wisconsin, and served as a Republican in the U.S. Senate from there.

But since you mention it, you will note that Kennedy's Civil Rights Act of '64 garnered more support from Republicans than from Democrats (maybe we should credit Lincoln for getting that particular Republican ball rolling, or President Eisenhower for promoting the Civil Rights Act of '57, concerning which you'll note Southern Democrat Strom Thurmond fought valiantly against with a record breaking filibuster).
