Noticed in the Nov. issue of Video Magazine that Direct Broadcast Satellite services will be broadcasting HDTV next year (along with broadcasters in 10 major metro areas). Advances in video compression and multiplexing will allow the DBS companies to fit more standard channels on existing transponders to free enough bandwidth for HDTV telecasts. This indicates that more than one-half of all households will have the ability to purchase access to HDTV transmissions before the end of '98. It's heating up a lot faster than anyone expected.... Mid-January may well be the pre-launch of Zenith's 1998 lineup of HDTVs, SDTVs, Divx and Network TVs (new set-top boxes) at the International CE show in Las Vegas. Got my badge. Anyone else going?
