Didn't FDR seize all the gold in the last Great Depression. If you don't seize thegold, how can you possibly repudiate your debt (oooppps - polite people say inflate your way out - pardon me.)

If you let the gold hang around, then there will be an alternative currency. Can't allow that.

Not really related but I heard a great quip the other day:

Thermodynamics - you can't win, you can't break even, and you have to play.

So it is with trying to accumulate and retain wealth. Except that with the dim bulbs Clowngress, one has a fighting chance. In thermodynamics you were matching wits with Lord Kelvin. Am increasingly short the Treasuries (long TBT). Be a rough ride on those today and in the near term return to flight to safety.
