My point here is - there ARE environmental side-effects to EVERYTHING, even the supposedly benign renewables liberal folks want to limit us to.

Agreed.

There is more than enough land that has been trashed by man and abandoned in the desert SW that could be used to power virtually all of the U.S.

You just have to carefully pick and fully evaluate your spots for development.
