It's deeply offensive to many to charge that Obama did not write his own book. It's the same charge, incidentally, that was made against the first great black American writer: Frederick Douglass. Frederick's powerful stage presence soon proved doubters wrong.

Douglas didn't need a teleprompter, or the low-tech equivalent, memorized remarks. He spoke well ex tempore. Obama sucks at it.

The charge against Dreams From My Father is not that Ayers wrote it, but that he edited it and rewrote sections of it. I have seen plausible arguments from stylistic analysis.

Remember that Obama wasn't even in office yet at the time he wrote this book, which is astonishingly good for a first-time author with no record of having published anything before. Not a law article. Not a story. It is hardly an insult to speculate that Obama had more 'help' in writing, and finding a publisher for, this book than he is letting on.
