That's a long, complicated story. I'm going from memory here, so I might not have the details exactly right. I thought the State Attorney General is supposed to defend the Governor in such actions. However...

Her first AG was an old personal friend from Wasilla who was in way over his head. (That describes many of her top people.) When the Troopergate scandal broke, he screwed up and got himself into the middle of the process in such a way that he also became a subject of the investigation. I think that's why she got her own lawyer. After Troopergate, she kept using her private lawyer for the followup complaints. Frankly, I suspect the guy is milking her for all she's worth.

Her first AG was eventually censured by the legislature, so he resigned. Her second AG pick was extremely controversial, and the legislature took the unprecedented step of voting to deny his nomination. She finally appointed a respectable, qualified AG a few weeks ago...
