Over the past year, Mr. Baucus, Democrat of Montana, has strong-armed industry groups, warning them not to publicly criticize the process if they want to stay in negotiations.

Oops.... That much for open national debate -- say something critical in public, and you're out in the cold. Can't say I like that.

Can't beat them, join them... That's why everyone is around the table making deals -- for which the public will pay, in the end.
